All Have Sinned – Why Does It Matter?

All Have Sinned – Why Does It Matter?

A verse in the Bible tells us that we have all sinned. What is sin? Am I affected by sin? What does God do about sin? Is sin ok to God?

Let’s look at the Bible verse. It says ‘…For all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory’. Romans 3:23. In Romans 3:10 we also read, ‘There is none righteous, no not one.’ You can look at your own heart and see if you have sinned by examining the 10 Commandments. The 10 Commandments are found in the Old Testament of the Bible, in Exodus 20. Simply speaking they are:

1. (God speaking) ‘You shall have no other gods before Me’

2. (God speaking) ‘You shall not make any graven image.’ (Only worship God. Nothing else)

3. ‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain’

4. ‘Remember to keep the Sabbath Day holy’

5. ‘Honor your father and mother’

6. ‘You shall not kill (murder)’

7. ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ (Adultery means wanting to be married to someone else)

8. ‘You shall not steal’

9. ‘You shall not lie’

10. ‘You shall not covet’ (want what others have)

You might think of sin as something real bad like robbing a bank or shooting some people. Those are serious sin, indeed. But, from God’s perspective, ALL SIN IS SERIOUS. Do you think you have never murdered someone? If you have been angry with someone, it can be the sin of murder. The Bible says that if you hate someone, that is murder, and no murderer has eternal life in him (or her). Abortion is murder. People think that a baby inside of its mother is a piece of tissue. Well, yes that is true. Just like you are a piece of tissue and I am too. The Bible tells us that God forms us in the womb. He considers an unborn baby as a human being. So, abortion is murder as well.

What about committing adultery? Having an affair with someone you are not married to is committing adultery. But I bet you would be surprised to find out that a person who is not married is able to commit adultery too! Jesus said, “Whoever looks at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery in his heart.” Guys used to go to the beach in order to ‘watch the girls’. There is even a song called, “I’m a Girl Watcher”. What is this all about? It’s about looking at girls and lusting after them. It is a form of ‘committing adultery’. Let me put in something here though. I need to tell you this before you give up. Many men, and I’m sure some women, are into pornography, and are trapped. They don’t see a way out of it and feel it is bigger than they are. Yes, pornography is a snare and impossible to get out of, without help from above. God wants to help you get out of it. It will destroy you and keep you from coming to God. Please, get help. Don’t be embarrassed. There are ministries like http://www.ccef.org (CCEF) that can help you find a good Biblical counselor. We start out thinking that sin is not really hurting anybody, but that is a lie. If you are a person who is starting to get involved in pornography, please get out of it, and get help. God can help.

So far we have looked at being angry and lust. There are many variations of sins that are based on the 10 Commandments. Lying is one of them. The Bible has a lot to say about being deceptive. Are you honest in everything you do all the time? Cheating on tests, game playing, and income taxes are forms of dishonesty. Just as exaggeration and telling half-truths. How about being misleading?

We have covered three of the 10 Commandments. Think about this; Let’s say that someone put a microchip in your brain. They take it out a week later. Everything you thought about throughout the week could be put up on a projector screen. How would you feel about that? How would you go about that week knowing that at the end of the week all of your thoughts would be in full view for everyone to see?

Everyone has sinned and everyone needs the Gospel. That includes you. I care about your soul and don’t want you to have to be punished for your sins eternally. Please consider this.
